Unpaid domestic work

Indicator Name

Proportion of time spent on unpaid domestic and care work

Indicator ID in PRIME

IN00023396

Definition

Definition

This indicator looks at the proportion of time spent on unpaid domestic and care work, by sex, age and location.

The evidence is clear that unequal distribution of domestic and care work is a driver for gender inequality, can reinforce inequitable gender norms and roles, and has critical impacts on labor force participation, wages and job quality.

It is essential for the indicator to be disaggregated by sex/gender, age and location at minimum, and ideal to disaggregate for other grounds of inequality (e.g. race/ethnicity, disability, nationality and internally displaced, refugee and migrant status, slum residency) wherever possible.
