Definition
This indicator measures the proportion of households with access to a safely managed sanitation service (as defined by WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene) out of the total number of households in the project area over a specified time period.
Safely Managed Sanitation = Use of improved facilities that are not shared with other households and where excreta are safely disposed of in situ or removed and treated offsite
Note: Improved sanitation facilities are those designed to hygienically separate excreta from human contact, and include: flush/pour flush to piped sewer system, septic tanks or pit latrines; ventilated improved pit latrines, composting toilets or pit latrines with slabs.
Specified Time Period: means the most recent data available during the project period.

Total number of households within the Save the Children program
Annual household survey using JMP recommended ‘core’ questions to facilitate monitoring of WASH targets can be accessed at https://washdata.org/report/jmp-2018-core-questions-household-surveys or program monitoring data with number of households within the Save the Children program that have access to a Safely Managed Sanitation services and total number of households within the Save the Children program
