Improved reading, numeracy, and SEL in humanitarian crisis
Indicator Name
Indicator ID in PRIME
Definition
This indicator aims to measure learning in three subject areas: reading, numeracy, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). These subject-areas are priorities for Save the Children and are recognized as providing the foundations needed for children to thrive in other subject-areas.
SEL is the process through which children acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and process and retain information. (see SEL in Education Programming: Implementation Guide )
Foundational literacy and numeracy knowledge and skills are core building blocks which enable broader learning and open up choices and opportunities both within and outside of school (see Quality Learning Framework 2022). This indicator focuses on reading (rather than literacy [reading and writing]) as measuring reading with assessment tools is more feasible.
Numerator
Number of targeted learners in humanitarian crisis who improved reading, numeracy, and socio-emotional learning over the period of the programme.
Denominator
Total number of trageted learners
Data Collection Method/Tool: Assessment tools that measure reading, numeracy, and SEL (E.g. HALDO, or a combination of ASER, EGRA/EGMA, or other reading and numeracy measure and IDELA or other SEL measure).
