Postnatal care coverage for newborns (%)
Indicator Name
Indicator ID in PRIME
Definition
This indicator measures the percentage of newborns who had postnatal contact with a health-care provider within 2 days of birth over the project specified time period.
Please note different countries may measure postnatal contact after birth within a different number of days, such as 4 or 6 days post birth if this is the norm.
There are two methods to measure this indicator:
(1) Service statistics (data from health facilities, HMIS/DHIS2)
(2) Population-based surveys
Note: This indicator includes both women who gave birth in the health facility and those who gave birth outside the health facility, and the health check can be either at a health facility or at home
Numerator
1) Number of new borns who received postnatal contact over the project specified time period
2) Number of new borns who had postnatal contact with a health-care provider within 2 days of birth over the project specified time period
Denominator
1) Number of live births in the health facility during the same project specified period
2) Total number of last live births over the project specified time period
There are two methods to measure this indicator:
(1) Looking at data from health facility service statistics, HMIS/DHIS2, program records, child health registers.
To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of new borns who received postnatal contact over the project specified time period by the number of live births in the health facility during the same project specified time period. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
(2) Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of women aged 15-49 years who in the project specified time period delivered a live child: was a live child given birth to in the last [specified period of time], was their health checked at a facility, home or other place by a health-care provider, how long after delivery was the first check, who performed the check and for facility births, was a check performed by a provider after discharge (with similar questions on timing, location, who performed check)
(Note: sequence of questions about details of postnatal contact will differ depending on whether the delivery occurred in/outside a health facility)
To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of new borns who had postnatal contact with a health-care provider within 2 days of birth over the project specified time period by the total number of last live births during the same project specified time period. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
