Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of women aged 15-49 years who are using, or whose partner is using, at least one modern method of contraception.

Modern methods of contraception include:
a) Female sterilization (tubal ligation, laparectomy, voluntary surgical contraception for women)
b) Male sterilization (vasectomy, voluntary surgical contraception for men)
c) The contraceptive pill (oral contraceptives)
d) Interuterine contraceptive device (IUD)
e) Injectables (Depo-Provera)
f)  Implants (Norplant)
g) Male condom (prophylactic, rubber)
h) Female condom
i) Diaphragm, contraceptive foam and contraceptive jelly female condom
j) Lactational amenorrhea method (LAM)
k) Standard days method (SDM)
l)  Emergency contraception (double dose of contraceptive pill twice in 24 hours for two days) and specific dosage “emergency pills”
m) Country-specific modern methods and other modern contraceptive methods respondent mentioned (including cervical cap, contraceptive sponge, and others), but does NOT include abortion, menstrual regulation.

Numerator

Women aged 15-49 who are using or whose partner is using, at least one modern method of contraception over the project specified time period

Denominator

Total number of women aged 15-49 during the same project specified time period

Recommended Means of Verification

This indicator can be measured using survey reports or adolescent and PNC health registers.

Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of women aged 15-49 years:
Are you or your partner using any method to delay or avoid pregnancy?
What is the main method that you or your partner use to delay or avoid pregnancy?
a) Female sterilization
b) Male sterilization
c) IUD
d) Injectables
e) Implants
f)  Pill
g) Male condom
h) Female condom
i) Emergency contraception
j) Standard Days Method (SDM)
k) Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)
l)  Rhythm method
m) Other Modern Method

To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of women aged 15-49 years who are using or whose partner is using, at least one method of contraception by the total number of surveyed women aged 15-49. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage during the same specified project time period.
