Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of children under age 5 with confirmed or suspected malaria (fever in malaria risk areas) in the last 2 weeks who received anti-malarial treatment (in areas with malaria).

Case, suspected malaria: Illness suspected by a health worker to be due to malaria, generally based on the presence of fever with or without other symptoms. See this guide for further details.

Numerator

Number of children under age 5 with confirmed or presumptive malaria (fever or history of fever) in the last 2 weeks who received anti-malarial treatment (in areas with malaria)

Denominator

Total number of children under age 5 with confirmed or presumptive malaria (fever or history of fever) in the last 2 weeks (in areas with malaria)

Recommended Means of Verification

Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with (a representative sample of) mothers of children under age 5, inquiring if their children had experienced fever in the 2 weeks preceding the survey and what treatment was received:
Has [name] been ill with a fever at any time in the last 2 weeks?
At any time during the illness, did [name] take any medicine for the illness?
What medicine did [name] take? Antimalarial medicine/antibiotic medicine/other medicine?
