Definition

Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of children aged 8-13 enrolled in Catch-up Clubs who achieve the highest ASER reading level, i.e., 70% in story level with comprehension.

If a sample survey was used, please use MEAL PIRS under Source of Data to show sampling method, sample size, confidence level, confidence interval, size of target population, and the effect size where a comparison group was also assessed.

Numerator

Children aged 8-13 who had NOT achieved the reading level for the last grade of lower primary at the time of enrolment into the Catch-Up club, who then achieve the highest level, i.e, 70% in story level with comprehension in the Catch-Up Clubs reading assessment (adapted from ASER)

Denominator

Number of children enrolled in Catch-Up Clubs aged 8-13 AND who had NOT achieved the reading level for the last grade of lower primary at the time of enrolment

Recommended Means of Verification

To measure this indicator, the project will need to develop its own reading assessment - letters, words, sentences/paragraphs, short story, and comprehension questions - tailored to the context and in the language of instruction used in Catch-up Clubs, based on the Catch-up Clubs reading assessment tool (which was adapted from the ASER reading assessment). The Catch-up Clubs reading assessment guidance is in this document: https://savethechildren1.sharepoint.com/:w:/r/what/education/_layouts/15/Doc.aspx?sourcedoc=%7B51456921-18A1-4D95-8C9E-42CE7E83A3AB%7D&file=MEAL%20Education%20Tools%20Page.docx&action=default&mobileredirect=true.

To calculate this indicator, divide the number of children aged 8-13 who had NOT achieved the reading level for the last grade of lower primary at the time of enrolment into the Catch-Up club who then achieve the highest reading level (i.e. 70% in story level with comprehension) by the number of children enrolled in Catch-Up Clubs aged 8-13 AND who had NOT achieved the reading level for the last grade of lower primary at the time of enrolment. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
