Adult attitude towards physical and humiliating punishment

Indicator Name % of adults who believe that physical and humiliating punishment is necessary to raise children
Indicator ID in PRIME IN00041367

Definition

Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of adults who believe that physical and humiliating punishment is necessary to raise children

Numerator

Number of male and female adults who report they believe physical and/or humiliating punishment is necessary to raise children

Denominator

Total number of male and female adults surveyed

Recommended Means of Verification

This indicator is measured through interviews/surveys using the Safe Families Caregiver Questionnaire, Part 1: questions 1 and 2.

Individuals should be asked the following questions:
- Do you believe that to bring up, raise, or educate a child properly, the child needs to be physically punished: hitting, slapping, beating, or smacking?
- Do you believe that doing any one of the following is necessary to bring up, raise, or educate a child properly: belittling, threatening, scaring, or ridiculing a child?

If the adult responds "yes" to either question 1 or 2 (or to both), they would be counted towards this indicator. Please note that this indicator can count both caregivers of children currently under 18 and other adults in the community (e.,g. community leaders, adults whose children are over 18, etc).

To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of male and female adults who hold these beliefs by the total number of male and female adults surveyed. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
