Definition

Definition

The indicator measures the proposition of births attended by skilled health personnel among all births during a specified reference period at home or in a health facility in the SC SC-supported project area.

Unless specified, the statistic should include both live births and stillbirths, as defined by the health facility and/or national or subnational vital statistics offices. Please identify all health personnel or other personnel that assisted during the delivery, which could include 1) doctor, 2) nurse, 3) midwife, 4) traditional birth attendant, 5) community health worker, 6) family member/friend,d 7) other, or 8) no one

Skilled health personnel provide effective, uninterrupted, and quality care, and are defined as competent maternal and newborn health (MNH) professionals who are educated, trained, and regulated to national and international standards. All competent MNH professionals are able to:
(a) provide and promote evidence-based, human rights–based, quality, socioculturally sensitive, and dignified care to women and newborns; (b) facilitate physiological processes during labor and delivery to ensure a clean and positive childbirth experience; and (c)identify and manage or refer women and/or newborns with complications. Numerator

Number of births attended by skilled health personnel over the project specified time period.
Denominator

Total number of births during the same project specified time period.

Recommended Means of Verification

Data from health facility service statistics, health facility birth registers, HMIS/DHIS2, program records, and surveillance system reports. Data from routinely collected and compiled administrative data sources will provide information as recorded in medical charts/ records or registers and are entered into national and/or subnational health management information systems (HMIS).

 

To calculate the indicator's value, divide the number of births attended by skilled health personnel over a specified time period by the total number of births during the same specified period. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage. Please identify all health personnel or other personnel who assisted during the delivery.
