Definition

Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of adolescents and youth who have undertaken further educational and training.

Individuals can be counted as having undertaken further education if they have enrolled in an education/training program in the last 12 months.

Save the Children defines adolescence and youth as a stage of social, physical, cognitive, and emotional development between childhood and adulthood, which can include a range of ages. As general guidance, adolescence may be considered from ages 10–19: very young adolescents (VYAs): 10–14, older adolescents: 15–19. It is also important to note an overlap between the age definitions of adolescence and youth. The UN’s definition of youth is: “those persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years old, without prejudice to other definitions by Member States.” When designing a programme, we encourage consideration of local definitions of adolescents and youth (alternatively, young people), considering their roles and responsibilities.

Number of adolescents and youth aged 10-24 who have undertaken further education opportunities in the last 12 months, including secondary education, vocational/technical training, and university study

Total number of adolescents and youth aged 10-24 surveyed

Recommended Means of Verification

Measuring this indicator requires looking at baseline/midline/endline surveys and program records.

The sample survey will be used to identify the number of AYs aged 10-24 who have undertaken further education opportunities in the last 12 months. The denominator will be given by the number of AYs aged 10-24 surveyed. The result should then be multiplied by 100 to obtain the percentage.

At baseline, it will be measured on a representative sample of the total AYs aged 10-24 targeted. At endline, it should be measured on AYs who have been reached by relevant supporting activities, which could include life skills training, bursary support, etc.
