Definition

Definition

This indicator measures the percentage of individual civil society actors who, with support from Save the Children (SC) and/or its partners, report an improvement in their abilities to exercise civil rights and freedoms and navigate challenges and restrictions to civic space imposed by the government or other stakeholders such as the private sector.

This indicator is tailored to adult civil society actors, and data is gathered at the individual level, excluding assessments of organizational capacity. Civil society actors comprise a varied group, including members of organizations like NGOs, CBOs, advocacy groups, campaigns, and media organizations. Additionally, independent individuals, such as women's rights activists, human rights defenders, community leaders, and environmental activists, among others, are also considered civil society actors.

Numerator

The number of individual civil society actors reporting increased abilities to exercise their civil rights and freedoms and navigate challenges and restrictions.

Denominator

The total number of surveyed individual civil society actors supported by SC and/or its partners

Recommended Means of Verification

Measuring this indicator requires looking at:
(1) Participant Surveys and Feedback: Direct feedback collected from individual civil society actors through surveys or interviews, capturing their experiences and perceptions regarding the improvement of their abilities to exercise their civil rights and freedoms and navigate restrictions to civic space.
(2) Focus Group Discussions and Interviews: Qualitative data gathered through discussions and interviews with individual civil society actors, providing deeper insights into their abilities to exercise their civil rights and freedoms and navigate challenges to civic space.

To calculate the indicator, divide the number of individual civil society actors who report improvement in their ability to exercise their civil rights and freedoms and navigate challenges and restrictions to civic space by the total number of individual civil society actors supported by Save the Children (SC) and/or its partners OR The size of a representative sample of individual civil society actors supported by Save the Children (SC) and/or its partners. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.

Purpose

The indicator aims to assess the effectiveness of SC's interventions in empowering individual civil society actors, enhancing their capacities, and improving their ability to exercise civil rights and freedoms and navigate challenges and restrictions imposed by the government or other stakeholders.
